The Chai Ma Wan trail isn't new in itself, but the ability to mountain bike on it is, and the bike section has just been extended bring Lantau one of the longest and most challenging trails in Hong Kong.
I'm more in to road riding, and found this trail by accident as I was walking to Sea Ranch; an almost abandoned 1970's luxury development.
The trail piqued my interest as I had read about the new bike park opening in Mui Wo, and got to try it out with my friend Steve Coward who co-runs MTBHK a company that takes riders of all expertise levels out for guided rides and instruction days. Steve kindly offered a deal to IslanderHK readers if you're interested in a ride out in the Lantau countryside.
The Chi Ma Wan Mountain Bike Trail is an 18km long section of moderate and technical riding that takes you around the Chi Ma Wan peninsula. On my walk I was genuinely confused how anyone could ride any of the trail as I was finding it hard enough on foot!
If you're mad enough to give it a go, the route is circular. It's easiest to join from Pui O or Mui Wo, depending where you're coming from.
I'd love to hear from you if you have tackled this trail and what you thought of it.
