How to Claim Your Free Food Waste Bin

Did you know that in 2022, Hong Kong was sending 11,130 tonnes of solid waste to landfill everyday? Imagine 11,130 African elephants lined up - it's that much. Every single day.

30% of that waste is from discarded food, which causes a detrimental impact on the environment as it decomposes; leeching into the soil and giving off harmful gasses, so the government has decided to implement their new waste recycling scheme. 'Smart' food waste recycling bins are being rolled out at designated public estates, with the Caribbean Coast in Tung Chung being one of them. Residents will have probably spotted them dotted about the estates' walkways. These bins use a Green$ app to monitor how much food waste you're disposing of and will reward you with points that can be redeemed for small prizes.

If you're wondering what sort of waste can go in these bins, check out this short government video. It's basically anything organic. Make sure to remove any packaging first and, crucially, hold the inside part of the bucket as you tip the contents into the machine or you'll lose half your bucket! If you don't have your phone or the app, you an scan the little QR code hanging on the machine and it will open the door, but you won't get the points.
